Jerry Lee Lewis & My Mama

According to family legend, rock 'n' roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis once placed a call to my mother.  It didn't go as anyone expected.

  1. When I worked as a manager for a home improvements retailer in Connecticut I had the great misfortune to wait on Martha Stewart. Because I worked so many hours a week I never watched TV. So, of course, I had no clue who she was. She took exception to me making her wait while I took care of another customer while she was waiting for me. Afterwards one of the customer service employees asked me if I knew who she was. I said I didn't. Even after she told me who she was it didn't matter much to me.

  2. Celebrities are the closest America has to royalty. Some of them are asses. Robert Goulet once ripped into a young reporter colleague of mine for not having had his entire resume memorized.
Believe or not, though, many celebrities are unassuming and don't expect special treatment. I've had a chance to meet quite a few over the course of my TV news career.
